Chapter1IntroductionTheUnitedNationsEconomicandSocialCommissionforAsiaandthePacific(ESCAP)isthemostinclusiveintergovernmentalplatformintheAsia-Pacificregion.TheCommissionpromotescooperationamongits53memberStatesandnineassociatemembersinpursuitofsolutionstosustainabledevelopmentchallenges.ESCAPisoneofthefiveregionalcommissionsoftheUnitedNations.TheESCAPsecretariatsupportsinclusive,resilientandsustainabledevelopmentintheregionbygeneratingaction-orientedknowledgeaswellasbyprovidingtechnicalassistanceandcapacity-buildingservicesinsupportofnationaldevelopmentobjectives,regionalagreementsandtheimplementationofthe2030AgendaforSustainableDevelopment.TheUnitedNationsEconomicCommissionforAfrica(ECA)iscomposedof54memberStates,andplayingadualroleasaregionalarmoftheUnitedNationsandasakeycomponentoftheAfricaninstitutionallandscape,ECAiswell-positionedtomakeuniquecontributionstoaddresstheContinent’sdevelopmentchallenges.ThecontributionbyECAtothetaskofcarryingforwardtheUN2030AgendaandAfricanUnion(AU)Agenda2063iscentredontheCommission’sthreecorefunctions,namely,itsconveningfunction,itsfunctionas,athinktankanditsoperationalfunction.ECA’smissionisguidedbyfivenewstrategicdirectionswhichare:(i)advancingECA’spositionasapremierknowledgeinstitutionthatbuildsonitsuniquepositionandprivilegetobringglobalsolutionstothecontinent’spr...
